Montrealer Katie Moore has been called an
alt-country crooner, an angel-voiced folk darling and even a seductive
songstress. She says that she “just likes to sing.”
And sing she does. She cut her teeth on old-time country music at
the Wheel Club and Sunday Nights at Barfly, Montreal’s acoustic
country hotspots. The traditional influence seeps through on her
recently completed and as-of-yet unreleased solo album, a
collaboration with producer Warren Spicer (Plants and Animals,
Timber!, Orillia Opry).
Katie plays in various Montreal-based bands, including vocals and
electric bass in Timber! (a country-folk ensemble with members of
Plants and Animals and Spengler), and sings and plays guitar for
Yonder Hill (a bluegrass band with Angela Desveaux and Dara Weiss).
She also sings with Socalled, a hip hop/klezmer group that toured
Europe twice in 2006.
Katie is most excited about singing her own songs. Her solo act is
often a duet with longtime friend and guitarist Warren Spicer, but
when the situation calls for it, she is joined onstage with her band,
which can really groove. Her solo act can be seen regularly in
Montreal at venues such as the Casa del Popolo, the Sala Rossa and the
Divan Orange. She has recently started playing in other cities
(Toronto, Ottawa, Stockholm) and looks forward to more traveling and
singing.
“If you’ve heard her sing, you know that description won’t do it
justice. Moore has the voice to make devils want to be good, even
though they really really can’t.” – Pop Montreal 2005
“Katie Moore: angel-voiced Montreal smart-alec.” – T’cha Dunlevy,
Montreal Gazette, 10/6/2005
“There are moments when Katie Moore sings that make it easy to
understand what it must have been like to accidentally stumble in on
Joni Mitchell in some dive bar.” – Brendan Murphy, Hour, 12/05/05
